Key Insights on T20 International Hat-trick Records by Teams

Team Hat-trick Dominance and Milestones in T20Is

Sri Lankan and New Zealand bowlers have each taken six T20I hat-tricks each, the most for any team in T20Is. Australia follows them with five hat-tricks.

The first-ever T20I hat-trick was taken by Australia’s Brett Lee in a T20 World Cup game against Bangladesh in 2007.

Oman’s Khawar Ali became the first bowler from an associate team to grab a hat-trick in T20Is. He dismissed three Netherlands batters in a row in the 2019 Pentangular series in Al Amerat.

Multiple Hat-tricks and Consecutive Feats in T20Is

Eight bowlers have captured a hat-trick two or more times in T20Is. They are Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka), Tim Southee (New Zealand), Mark Pavlovic (Serbia), Waseem Abbas (Malta), Pat Cummins (Australia), Hernan Fennell (Argentina), Khalid Ahmadi (Belgium), and Owais Ahmed (Qatar).

Cummins took his two hat-tricks in back-to-back matches in the 2024 T20 World Cup, with the first coming against Bangladesh, followed by the second against Afghanistan. This is the only instance of a bowler taking consecutive hat-tricks in T20Is.

Double Hat-Tricks and T20 World Cup Brilliance

Seven bowlers have picked up double hat-tricks (four wickets in four balls) in T20Is. They are Rashid Khan (Afghanistan), Malinga (Sri Lanka), Curtis Campher (Ireland), Jason Holder (West Indies), Waseem Yaqoob (Lesotho), Fennell (Argentina), and Jan Nicole Loftie-Eaton (Namibia).

Campher is the only bowler to grab a double hat-trick in the T20 World Cup. He dismissed four batters in four balls against the Netherlands in Abu Dhabi in the 2021 edition.

Ireland are the only team with two bowlers taking hat-tricks in the T20 World Cup. Josh Little is the other Irish bowler to achieve the feat against Sri Lanka in the 2022 edition.

UAE’s Karthik Meiyappan is the only bowler from an associate nation to take a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup.

Youngest Bowlers to Achieve T20I Hat-trick Milestone

Sierra Leone’s George Sesay is the youngest bowler to take a hat-trick in T20I cricket. He attained the feat against Botswana at the age of 17 years and three days in the 2023 Africa Cricket Association Cup.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Hasnain is the youngest bowler from a full member nation to pick up a T20I hat-trick. He claimed three wickets in three balls against Sri Lanka at the age of 19 years and 183 days in 2019.
