Key Insights on India’s Elite ODI Bowling Spells in Australia

Best and Expensive Bowling Records

Ajit Agarkar and Yuzvendra Chahal hold the joint best bowling figures for an Indian bowler in Australia in ODI cricket. Both bowlers had figures of 6 for 42 recorded at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground against Australia. This is also the best bowling analysis by any bowler in an ODI innings down under.

Despite Agarkar’s brilliant figures of 6 for 42, India lost that match by 18 runs, making it the best bowling figures by any bowler in an ODI defeat in Australia.

Chahal has also delivered the most expensive bowling figure by an Indian bowler in Australia, having conceded 89 runs while taking a wicket in the 2020 Sydney ODI.

Ravi Shastri’s figures of 5 for 15 are the best by any bowler in the second innings of an ODI in Australia.

Economy, Maiden Overs, and Milestone Hauls

Kapil Dev has bowled the most economical ODI spell by an Indian in Australia, taking 1 for 5 at an economy rate of 0.83 in six overs against Australia in Perth in 1991 (minimum one wicket taken).

Kapil has also delivered the most maiden overs, bowling five in his 1 for 15 spell against Australia in Sydney in 1981.

Kapil bagged seven three-wicket hauls, while Ishant Sharma picked up three four-wicket hauls, the most for India in Australia in ODIs.

Captain’s Performance and All-Time Career Records

Kapil’s figures of 4 for 30 in the 1986 Melbourne ODI are the best by an Indian captain in Australia. This is the fifth-best bowling figure by a visiting captain in Australia in ODIs. (Check Kapil Dev’s captaincy record here.)

Kapil is also the top wicket-taker for India in ODIs played down under, with 57 scalps to his name.
