Key Insights

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have clinched the IPL title five times, the joint-most by a team.

All their title victories came under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. When CSK claimed their fifth title in 2023, MSD became only the second skipper to win five IPL trophies.

Dhoni is, of course, CSK’s most successful captain, with over 130 wins. In fact, he is the most successful skipper in the entire league.

CSK’s first two title triumphs came in successive seasons in 2010 and 2011. This was the first-ever instance of a team winning the IPL in consecutive editions.

CSK are the only team to qualify for the playoffs in 10 consecutive seasons. They had a streak from 2008 to 2019, although they didn’t feature in 2016 and 2017.

The Super Kings have also qualified for the IPL playoffs the most times (12). Apart from their above streak, they made it to the knockouts in 2021 and 2023. Interestingly, CSK went on to win the trophies in both seasons.

The 2020 season was the first time CSK failed to enter the playoffs. They finished second last on the points table with six victories. Since then, the Chennai-based team has exited from the league stage four times.

CSK have won 10 or more matches in nine IPL seasons, the most by a team. Seven of those instances came in back-to-back editions, which are again the most by an IPL team.

CSK have been runner-ups in five seasons, the most by a team. Three times they lost the final against Mumbai Indians and once each against Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders.
