It is incredibly challenging for a youngster to effect an innings of a huge calibre on debut. But a few batters showed their calibre from the get go.

Historical Milestones and Record-Breaking ODI Debut Innings

South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke holds the record for the highest individual score by a batter on ODI debut. He scored 150 off 148 balls against New Zealand in Lahore in the 2025 tri-series. The Proteas youngster broke 47-years old record of Desmond Haynes.

England’s Dennis Amiss became the first-ever batter to score a century in ODIs. He scored 103 off 134 balls against Australia in the 1972 Manchester ODI.

West Indies’ Amir Jangoo has smashed the fastest century on ODI debut. He took just 80 balls to reach the 100-run mark against Bangladesh in the 2024 Basseterre ODI.

South Africa have the most debutant batters scoring ODI hundreds, with four batters achieving the feat for them.


Run-Chases and Result-Based ODI Debut Performances

Breetzke’s 150 is also the highest individual score by a debutant batter in an ODI loss.

Andy Flower (115* vs SL, 1992), Abid Ali (112 vs AUS, 2019) and Michael Lumb (106 vs WI, 2014) are the other debutants to score a hundred in an ODI loss.

Haynes’ 148 against Australia, meanwhile, is the highest individual score in a winning cause on ODI debut. 


Abid Ali’s 112, scored in Pakistan’s unsuccessful chase of 277 against Australia in 2019, is the highest score by a debutant while batting second in ODIs.

New Zealand’s Rob Nicol has recorded the highest individual score in a successful run chase on ODI debut. He scored an unbeaten 108 off 131 balls against Zimbabwe in the 2011 Harare ODI.


Designated Roles and Associate Nation Achievements

Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz has brought up the highest score on ODI debut as a wicketkeeper. He scored a-run-a-ball 127 against Ireland in the 2021 Abu Dhabi ODI. Flower is the only other wicketkeeper to achieve the feat.

Gurbaz struck nine sixes in his 127-run knock, the most by a debutant batter in an ODI innings.

Haynes has scored the most fours in an innings on ODI, having hit 16 in his 148-run knock.

Mark Chapman has recorded the highest individual score by an associate batter on ODI debut. He scored an unbeaten 124 off 116 balls for Hong Kong against the UAE in 2015. Notably, Chapman now plays for New Zealand.

Scotland’s Michael English is the only other associate batter to score a hundred on ODI debut. He smashed 107 off 122 balls against Namibia in 2024.
