2. Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – 374 vs South Africa (Colombo (SSC), 2006)
The Sri Lankan legendary batsman, Mahela Jayawardene, still holds the record of the highest individual score by an Asian Test skipper. The veteran Sri Lankan batsman smashed his career-best knock of 374 runs against South Africa in the Test series of 2006.
In the First Test match of the series, the South African skipper won the toss and bat first. However, SA bundled out in 169 runs. In the second inning of the Test match, Sri Lanka lost two early wickets on a score of 14, where Skipper Jayawardene and Sangakkara made a match-winning partnership of 624 runs. The Sri Lankan skipper scored 374 runs, including 43 fours and one six against a top-class SA bowling attack. Sangakkara also scored 287 runs as Sri Lanka posted a huge total of 756 runs. As a result, Sri Lanka won the Test match by an innings and 153 runs.
