Highest Run Chases and 400 Plus Targets in Tests

The West Indies have made the highest successful run chase in Test cricket. They chased down a 418-run target set by Australia in the 2003 St John’s Test.

Australia were the first team to chase down a 400-plus target in Tests, having overhauled 404 against England in the 1948 Leeds Test.

South Africa have recorded the highest successful run chase in an overseas Test. They chased down 414 runs against Australia in the 2008 Perth Test.

India are the only other team to gun down a 400-plus total in the longest format, having chased down 403 runs against the West Indies in the 1976 Trinidad Test.


Frequency of 300-Plus Chases in Tests

Australia, England and the West Indies are the only three teams to chase targets of 300 or more runs in five or more Tests.

England are the only team to make multiple run chases of 300 or more runs at a single ground, recording three instances at Leeds.

Australia (vs SA), England (vs AUS) and Pakistan (vs SL) have successfully chased down three 300-plus targets each against a Test team. 

New Zealand have scored the highest team total in an unsuccessful run chase in Tests. They were bowled out for 451 runs in their unsuccessful chase of 550 runs against England in the 2002 Christchurch Test.


Fastest Run Chases and Scoring Rate Records in Test History

Pakistan have registered the fastest 300-plus run chase in Tests, having thrashed a 302-run target against Sri Lanka in 57.3 overs in the 2014 Sharjah Test.

England have achieved the highest run rate in a successful run chase of 100 or more runs in Tests. They went at 8.21 while chasing 104 runs against New Zealand in the 2024 Christchurch Test.
