Key Insights

England have scored the most runs across both innings of a Test match among teams. The Englishman racked up 849 in the first innings before declaring their second innings on 272 for 9 to aggregate 1121 runs against the West Indies in 1930. This was the first time a team crossed 1000 runs in a single Test.

Australia have aggregated 1000 or more runs in two Tests, the most by a team in the longer format.

The first of Australia’s instances came in 1934 against England. They scored 1028 runs in both innings combined, the most by a team in a Test win.

Sri Lanka’s 952 came in a single outing, the most runs a team scored in a Test innings. England are the other team to score 900 or more runs in an innings. They declared the first innings of the 1938 Oval Test against Australia on 903 for 7, England’s highest Test total.

England have also recorded the highest run rate in a Test match (at least 500 runs). They amassed 921 runs in 136.5 overs at a run rate of 6.73 against Pakistan in the 2022 Rawalpindi Test.

136.5 overs batted by England across both innings are the fewest to score more than 900 runs by a team in a Test.

England are the only team to maintain a run rate above five in 10 or more Test matches. And except for one match against Bangladesh in 2005, other instances have come since 2022.

Australia, England, and India are the three teams to score 800-plus runs in 15 or more Test matches. On three counts, England went past the mark in a single innings, the most by a team.

Australia and India have scored 400-plus runs in each of the two innings of a Test on more than three occasions.

South Africa’s 1011 and England’s 970 in the 1939 Durban Timeless Test combined (1981) to make the highest run aggregate by both teams in a Test.
