Key Insights – India vs England: Head-to-Head Test Series Results

India and England faced each other in Test cricket for the first time in 1932. That was also India’s first match in the longer format. In the one-off Test at Lord’s, the hosts handed a 158-run defeat to the inexperienced Indians.

England were also off the mark in India in their first tour in 1933/34. They clinched the series by a 2-0 margin.

India, on the other hand, needed 30 years and eight series to clinch their first Test series victory. They managed a 2-0 lead to win the 1961/62 series held at home.

India, though, had to wait nine more years to claim a Test series in England. Their four-wicket win in the Oval Test (third match) helped seal the 1971 three-match series by 1-0. The Oval Test victory was also India’s first Test match win in England.

India have suffered four series whitewashes in England, the most for them in a single country. Two series whitewashes (1959 and 1967) unfolded before the 1971 victory, while the third one followed in 1974. Their most recent clean sweep was in 2011.

England, though, have conceded a lone series whitewash in India. They were swept away by the hosts in the three-match series in 1993.

All five Tests of the 1964 series held on Indian soil ended in draws. This was the third instance of all matches in a series getting drawn in Test cricket.

Key Insights – Overall Test Match Statistics: India vs England

While England won the very first Test, India were winless for 14 straight matches. It was only in 1952 that the Indian men were able to beat England in the longer format.

India defeated England by an innings and eight runs in Chennai to draw the series 1-1. Coincidentally, this was India’s first victory in the red-ball format after their debut in 1932.

England have won four matches with a 10-wicket margin, the most among these two teams. Three of those wins have come in India.

The 2024 Rajkot Test saw India beat England by 434 runs, the largest win margin by runs in India-England Tests. It is also India’s biggest Test win by run-margin.

Although England dominate in the overall head-to-head battle, India have been bossing this rivalry since 2016. More than a third of their Test wins have come since the 2016 home series.
