From Fluctuations to Fresh Starts: India’s Overseas Test Journey (2001-2015)

India didn’t have an ideal start in the 21st century. They lost four series and drew three between June 2001 and January 2004.

But then, with the 2004 Pakistan tour, things changed for good. India won nine of the 15 Test series between March 2004 and July 2011.

Then followed a catastrophic period till early 2015. India lost six Test series on the trot – twice each in Australia and England. They were even whitewashed by England (2011) and Australia (2011/12).

But the tide has changed again. The Men in Blue have been challenging their opponents in their backyards since 2015. Their two series wins in Australia are prime examples.

Virat Kohli has won the most overseas Tests for India as captain in this period. He won 16 matches, followed by Sourav Ganguly (11), MS Dhoni (6), and Rahul Dravid (5).
