We all know that the Indian Premier League has been expanded to 10 teams for the approaching 2022 season. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants are fixed as the two additional teams. However, with the tournament raising its team counts from 8 to 10, the IPL committee has decided to change the tournament format by tweaking the schedules by dividing the teams into two groups.
Coming back to this article, let’s read into how teams have been split and paired up for the league phase of IPL 2022.
Teams have been presented with seedings to decide on the grouping. The seedings are based on the number of championships earned by the teams in the tournament so far. Mumbai Indians, the 5 times IPL champions, are given the primary seeding, followed by Chennai Super Kings at 2.
Based on that, the teams are put into two groups, where MI (1), KKR (3), RR (5), DC (7), & LSG (9) are in Group A and CSK (2), SRH (4), RCB (6), PBKS (8), & GT (10) in Group B.
| GROUP A TEAMS | GROUP B TEAMS |
|---|---|
| Mumbai Indians | Chennai Super Kings |
| Kolkata Knight Riders | Sunrisers Hyderabad |
| Rajasthan Royals | Royal Challengers Bangalore |
| Delhi Capitals | Punjab Kings |
| Lucknow Super Giants | Gujarat Titans |
All 10 teams will play 7 home games and 7 away games, comprising 70 games in the league phase.
Each team will play 5 teams twice and 4 other teams once – 5 * 2 + 4 * 1 = 14 games per team.
Every team will play against the same group teams and the same-row team from the other group twice in the league stage. Find the complete schedule here.
For example, CSK will play SRH, RCB, PBKS, GT, & MI twice. And the other 4 teams once.

The home and away games for the teams will not be relevant in the 2022 edition of the game as IPL has announced 4 venues across two cities, Mumbai and Pune as the overall venues for the competition.
Every team will play four times each at Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai) and DY Patil Sports Academy (Mumbai), and three times each at Brabourne Stadium (CCI) (Mumbai) and the MCA International Stadium (Pune).
