Key Insights

Rashid Khan blazed his way to the highest score by a No. 8 batter in the IPL. The Afghan spin-bowling all-rounder thrashed 79 not out against Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2023.

Rashid’s effort, though, wasn’t enough as Gujarat Titans failed to chase 219 runs. This makes his 79* the second-highest score in a losing cause by a No. 7 or lower batter.

Harbhajan Singh needed 19 balls to reach his half-century against Kings XI Punjab in a 2015 game. This is the least number of balls taken by a No. 8 batsman to score a fifty in the IPL. Harbhajan eventually scored 64 off 24, which went in vain.

Ashutosh Sharma, though, has five scores of 30 or more runs at the No. 8 slot, the most by a batter.

In a 2018 game against Kolkata Knight Riders. Rashid achieved a strike rate of 340. This is the highest strike rate among the No. 8 batters with 25 or more runs in an innings. Rashid blasted an unbeaten 34 runs off 10 balls for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

MS Dhoni (311.11) and Krishnappa Gowtham (300.00) are the other No. 8 batters to have a 25-plus run knock at a 300 or more strike rate. Dhoni scored 28* off 9 against Lucknow, while Gowtham smashed 33* off 11 against MI.
