The insanity of Don Bradman’s Test batting numbers is still shell-shocking, even after 70 years. While he played most of his matches against England, his prolonged dominance against English bowlers is a miracle. His 19 centuries against England are the most a player has scored against a single opponent.
He is followed by India’s little master, Sunil Gavaskar, with 13 centuries against the West Indies. Gavaskar’s feat is particularly impressive as it came during the years 1971-1983, a period when the West Indies were considered unbeatable. He even scored 700 runs in his debut Test series against the West Indies in their own backyard.
One can see the authority of the English-Aussie combination in the stats, thanks to their long-driven history and the Ashes, the oldest cricket tournament that still exists.
Sachin Tendulkar is the only name to appear twice on the list, a testament to his 24 years of supremacy over opponents.
Gavaskar, who tops our list of the greatest Indian opening batters, also has 8 centuries against Australia, another top cricketing side of his era.
Steve Smith and Joe Root are the only current-generation cricketers in the top half of this list. Joe Root’s major chunk of Test centuries came against India. Both these batters are also in the lost of top ten batters with the most runs against India in Tests.
