After going unnoticed for the past year, ODI cricket is back in focus. Reason? 

The Champions Trophy is making a comeback this year. So teams have started prepping for the 50-over event.

Thus, there will be plenty of ODI action this year. And that means batters will be keen to get some runs under their belts.

Key Insights

Glenn Phillips brought up his maiden century in ODIs on February 8, 2025. The New Zealand all-rounder slammed an unbeaten 106 runs off 74 balls against Pakistan in the tri-series opener. Phillips reached his hundred in 72 balls, which is the second-fastest ODI ton by a visiting batter against Pakistan in Pakistan.

South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke had a stunning ODI debut two days later. He smashed 150 runs from 148 balls against New Zealand, making it the highest debut score by a batter.

Two veteran batters, Rohit Sharma and Kane Williamson, have returned to ODI action in style. Both batters scored a century each against England and South Africa, respectively.

Thus far, Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett has logged the highest individual score in ODIs this year. The right-hand opener amassed 169 runs off 163 balls against Ireland in Harare.

Shubman Gill has started plundering runs with consistency in his most favoured format. It will be interesting to see if he tops the list by the end of 2025.
