Getting dismissed by a run-out is the most unfortunate way of getting out in the game of cricket.

According to Wikipedia, a batsman is out run out if at any time while the ball is in play no part of his bat or person is grounded behind the popping crease and his wicket is fairly put down by the opposing side.

The understanding between the two batters on the field is very crucial from the batting team’s perspective. Run-outs have broken vital partnerships on many occasions in international cricket, thereby changing the courses of the matches. That is why a batsman must ensure he is not on the wrong side of the line during run-out opportunities.

But being in the international arena for a long period and having the job of stealing runs against high-quality fielders, you can’t avoid being on this list of batters with the highest number of run-out dismissals.

Rahul Dravid, the batsman who has faced more than 30000 deliveries in Test cricket, tops the list of batsmen with the most number of run-outs in international cricket across formats. Let’s get into the top ten names.

Among the list, Mahela Jayawardene is the only player to feature in more than 50 T20Is and ran out five times in the shortest form of the game.

Here are the format-wise table toppers of the run-out mode of dismissals:

• ODIs: Marvan Atapattu (Sri Lanka) – 41

• T20Is: Ross Taylor (New Zealand) – 11
  

Rahul Dravid, the list topper, comes second in both Tests and ODIs, with 40 & 13 dismissals respectively.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, known for his running out dismissals has been run-out 40 times in his ODI career, more than he has been dismissed by LBW (39) and Bowled (37).

Indian pair Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been dismissed by run-outs for 19 and 18 times, respectively. Other notable current-generation players to dismiss while attempting to run between the wickets for 18 times or more are Kane Williamson (20), Chris Gayle (18) and Joe Root (18). MS Dhoni, 26 times and Sourav Ganguly, 27 times have been lost the chase to the crease line, while making a run.
