Key Insights – Breakdown of Six-Hitting Feats in One Over

South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs and the USA’s Jaskaran Malhotra hold the joint record for the most runs scored in a single over in ODIs. Both struck six sixes in an over, 36 runs, against Daan van Bunge (Netherlands) and Gaudi Toka (PNG) in 2007 and 2021, respectively.

Gibbs’ 36-run effort is also the highest in an over in an ODI World Cup match.

Malhotra’s 36 runs, meanwhile, are the most by a batter in the 50th over in an ODI innings.

Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera is the only player to score and concede 30-plus runs each in an over in ODIs. He first hammered 34 runs against Robin Peterson (South Africa) in 2013 and conceded as many runs against James Neesham (New Zealand) in early 2019.

AB de Villiers is the only batter with three instances of scoring 30 or more runs in an over in ODIs.

Two of ABD’s instances (32 runs in 48th & 30 runs in 50th) came against the West Indies’ Jason Holder in Sydney in the 2015 World Cup encounter. This is the only instance of a batter aggregating 30 or more runs each in two overs in the same ODI.

ABD’s onslaught helped him score the fastest 150-run knock in ODIs, getting there in 64 balls.

England’s Dimitri Mascarenhas is the only other batter to hit five consecutive sixes in an over in ODIs.

Thisara Perera and James Neesham also hit five sixes in an over, although not in a row.

New Zealand’s Ross Taylor recorded three instances of scoring 25 or more runs in an over in the 2011 World Cup. Two of those instances (26 in 47th & 28 in 49th) came against Pakistan in Pallekele.

West Indies’ Jason Holder is the only bowler to concede 30 or more runs in an over twice in ODIs.

Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi scored 26 or more runs in an over four times each in ODIs.

Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan is the only batter to score six consecutive fours in an over in ODIs.
