Rohit Sharma Captaincy Record – ODI, Test, T20I, & IPL

What do you think that ticks Rohit Sharma as a captain? His calm nature, his approachable state, or the consistency he maintains in everything he does? I think it’s a mix of all.

Dinesh Karthik once called Rohit Sharma “a bowler’s captain”. He always backs them and trusts them to deliver their best. Even when you see him disappointed when there is a missed chance or a bad ball being bowled, he is not someone to rue over it but get back to the next ball immediately, pushing it all away.

He is also someone who backs players by giving them a long run, a quality which has aided Mumbai Indians, its success.

We have seen Virat Kohli as captain; now it’s time we move on to the era of Rohit Sharma’s leadership in all format of the game.

Let us look into the numbers involved in Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in detail.

Now let’s walk over, format by format.

Rohit Sharma Captaincy Record in ODI

Rohit, who made his debut on June 23, 2007, in Belfast against Ireland, captained his first game only at the end of 2017 in the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka – a three-team tournament involving the host and Bangladesh. India finished as the champions under Rohit, thanks to Dinesh Karthik’s historical last-ball six.

In the absence of Virat Kohli, he then got an opportunity to lead India again in the Asia Cup of 2018 and went on to give India its 7th Asia Cup win.

In 2019, the current Indian captain capped two more games against New Zealand in the opposition’s venue: one win and one loss.

Rohit Sharma went on to become India’s all-format captain in 2022, succeeding Virat Kohli. He led the men in blue in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where the side topped the league table and ended as the runner to Australia.

One can compare Rohit’s captaincy with the numbers of MS Dhoni or Virat to understand how the trio has taken the Indian cricket team to the levels above.

Rohit Sharma is the second Indian captain to score an ODI double century after Virender Sehwag. Though the number of games is low, his average ranks top for anyone who has 10 or more caps.

For a batsman, who’s constantly ranks at the top five T20 run-scorers, his record as captain has started to grow well now too.

He has the best strike rate for any Indian captain in the format.

He is also the only Indian captain to score a T20I century. In fact, he has two to his name.
