A young, talented Mumbai batter, Rohit Sharma, rose to prominence with his 205-run knock against Gujarat on his debut in the Ranji Trophy. His tremendous performances in domestic cricket earned him a national call-up.
Subsequently, Rohit made his ODI debut in 2007 against Ireland as a lower-order batter. He made his T20I debut in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Although Rohit didn’t get a chance to bat in his debut game, he went on to score his maiden half-century in the very next match.
Despite getting enough chances, he couldn’t make a mark early on in his career, and he oscillated in and out of the team. But in 2013, MS Dhoni promoted Rohit as an opener, which turned his fortunes around for good.
This masterstroke by Dhoni made Rohit one of the best Indian opening batsmen. Since then, Rohit hasn’t looked back and has delighted fans with his incredible knocks. And his ODI double centuries stand as testimony to it.
Later in 2013, Rohit made his much-awaited Test debut against the West Indies. He announced himself in style as he scored 177 runs on his debut, though he couldn’t cement his place in the team for longer due to his poor run. After making his way back into the Test squad in 2019, he has been an integral part of the setup.
In 2022, he was appointed captain of the Indian team across formats.
