Key Insights – Virat Kohli Country-wise Test Runs & Stats

Home Ground Dominance: A Statistical Fortress in India

Virat Kohli scored about 47 percent of his Test runs in India. His 4336 runs are the fifth most by an Indian batter at home.

Kohli’s average of 55.58 at home is the third best among Indians, behind Mohammad Azharuddin (55.93) and Dilip Vengsarkar (55.59) (minimum 2000 runs).

The right-hander brought up 14 Test centuries on home soil, the fourth most among Indians. He converted six of those knocks into double hundreds, the most in India. All of those double centuries came as India’s skipper!

Kohli also brought up his highest Test score on home turf. He accrued an unbeaten 254 versus South Africa in the 2019 Pune Test. This is also the highest Test score by a skipper for India.

Conquering the Land Down Under: Australia Performance

Outside the home conditions, Kohli enjoyed scoring runs in Australia. In five tours between 2011 and 2025, he accumulated 1542 runs in 34 innings. His run count is the second highest for India in Australia.

Kohli even scored his maiden Test hundred in Australia. He racked up 116 in the 2012 Adelaide Test.

King Kohli’s seven hundreds are the most for India down under. Four of those centuries came as India’s captain, again, the most. He is also the only Indian skipper to score two Test centuries in the same match in Australia. He smashed 115 and 141 in the 2014 Adelaide Test in what was his debut match as captain.

The 2014-15 Australia tour was remarkable for Kohli. He aggregated 692 runs across eight innings, the most for India in Australia in a Test series.

Battling the Swing: Performance in England

England is the other country where the Delhi batter has scored more than 1000 Test runs. His 1096 runs are the fourth most for India in England.

868 of those runs came as India’s captain, the most for India in England. It also included two centuries, the joint-most for India along with Azharuddin.

Kohli had a breakout England tour in 2018. He netted 593 runs in 10 innings, the second most for the Men in Blue in England in a Test series.

Navigating the Pace: South Africa Challenge

The right-hander also had a great run on the spicy South African decks. He aggregated 891 runs in South Africa, the second most for India in SA behind Sachin Tendulkar’s 1161. Kohli’s average of 49.50, though, is the highest (minimum 250 runs).

Milestones Across SENA Countries & Other Nations

While Kohli’s record in New Zealand isn’t noteworthy, he is among the four Indians to score Test centuries in each of the four SENA countries. His 12 centuries in SENA countries are the second most for India, behind Tendulkar’s 17. His 3781 runs are the third most combined in these four nations.

Kohli is the only Indian skipper to bring up a Test double hundred in the West Indies. He amassed 200 in the 2016 Antigua Test.

The top-order batter is one of the two Indian captains to score two Test centuries in Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh is the only country where Kohli couldn’t get a Test fifty. His highest score was 24 in the 2022 Mirpur Test.

The Global Impact: Overall Analysis & Legacy

Virat Kohli didn’t just dominate at home; he conquered challenging conditions worldwide! He’s the second-highest Indian run-scorer in Australia (with 7 centuries, the most for India there!) and boasts the highest average in South Africa (among those with 250+ runs).

Many of his biggest overseas milestones came when he was captain! He’s the only Indian skipper to score a Test double hundred in the West Indies and holds the record for the most centuries by an Indian captain in both Australia and England.
