Key Insights – Leading Century-Makers in Asia Cup

Sanath Jayasuriya has scored the most centuries in the Asia Cup. The former Sri Lankan batter scored six centuries in the ODI competition. Jayasuriya brought up three centuries each against Bangladesh and India, which is the most by any batter against a single team in the Asia Cup.

Sanath Jayasuriya’s seven ODI centuries (overall) against India is the highest number of centuries any Sri Lankan batter has scored against a single opponent in the format. It is also the most centuries any batter has scored against India in 50-overs cricket.

Kumar Sangakkara (vs Bangladesh), Lahiru Thirimanne (vs Pakistan), Shoaib Malik (vs India), and Virat Kohli (vs Pakistan) are the other batters with two centuries each against a single opponent.

Kohli is the only batter to score centuries in both the ODI and T20I Asia Cups. He has scored four tons in the ODI version and one hundred in the T20I tournament.

Babar Hayat was the first batter to score a hundred in the T20 Asia Cup. In fact, he was the first associate batter to score a century in the tournament’s history. Coincidentally, Hayat and Kohli both scored 122 runs against Oman and Afghanistan, respectively, the joint-highest individual score in the 20-over event.

Kohli also holds the record for the highest score in the ODI Asia Cup. He hammered 183 runs off 148 balls against Pakistan in Mirpur in 2012, which is also Kohli’s highest ODI score.

Shahid Afridi is the only captain to score two centuries in the Asia Cup. Both of his tons came in the 2010 edition, one against Sri Lanka (109) and one against Bangladesh (124).

Sangakkara is the only wicketkeeper to score multiple centuries in the continental tournament. He scored four centuries in total, two against Bangladesh and one each against Pakistan and India. The Sri Lankan wicketkeeper also holds the record for scoring the most 50+ scores in Asia Cup history.

Three of Sangakkara’s four centuries came in 2008, the most by a batter in a single Asia Cup edition. Jayasuriya is the only batter to score two centuries each in two Asia Cup editions (2004 and 2008), and this is the only instance of a batter scoring multiple hundreds in consecutive editions.

Marvan Atapattu, Jayasuriya, Fawad Alam, Lahiru Thirimanne, and Litton Das have all scored a century in an Asia Cup final.
