Key Insights – Leading Run-Scorers for Afghanistan in Test Cricket

Rahmat Shah: The Record-Breaker

Rahmat Shah stands as the leading run-scorer for Afghanistan in Tests and was the first to score 500 runs for the country in the format.

He also brought up the first-ever Test century for Afghanistan, scoring 102 runs against Bangladesh in the 2019 Chattogram Test. This knock contributed to Afghanistan’s largest Test victory by runs.

Rahmat holds the record for the most runs in a bilateral Test series for Afghanistan, having accumulated 392 runs in three innings during the 2024/25 Zimbabwe tour, including his personal best of 234.

Hashmatullah Shahidi’s Landmark Achievements

Hashmatullah Shahidi is the only Afghanistan batter to have converted his first two Test centuries into double centuries.

He holds the record for the highest individual score, smashing 246 runs against Zimbabwe in the 2024 Bulawayo Test. This captain’s knock propelled Afghanistan to their highest Test total of 699 all out.

Shahidi has also aggregated the most runs as a captain for Afghanistan.

Other Notable Batting Milestones

All of Afsar Zazai’s runs in Test cricket have come while playing as a wicketkeeper.

Ibrahim Zadran is the only opener to have aggregated more than 500 runs for the “Afghan Atalans” in Tests.

Ismat Alam became the first Afghanistan batter to score a century on Test debut, amassing 101 runs against Zimbabwe in January 2025. He is also just the ninth No. 8 batter in Test history to achieve this feat.
