Key Insights on Most Sixes in a Bilateral ODI Series

Top Individual Six-Hitting Records in ODI Series

Chris Gayle has scored the most sixes among batters in a bilateral ODI series, striking 39 maximums in the five-match home series against England in 2019.

Rohit Sharma’s 23 sixes in the 2013 home series against Australia are the most by a batter in a seven-match ODI bilateral series.

Bonus: Rohit and Gayle, along with Shahid Afridi, rule the overall ODI sixes chart. Together, the three six-hitting monsters form the only trio to smash 300+ sixes in ODI cricket history.

Shane Watson has smashed the most sixes in a three-match series, having struck 20 in the 2011 series against Bangladesh.

Watson’s 20 maximums are the joint-most by a batter in an overseas bilateral series, along with AB de Villiers’ 20 in the 2015 series in India.

Chris Gayle has scored 10 or more sixes in eight bilateral series, the most by a batter in ODIs. Gayle also holds the record for hitting 5+ sixes in most ODI innings.

Record-Breaking Captaincy and Wicketkeeper Performances

AB de Villiers’ 20 sixes against India are the most by a non-opener in a bilateral series in ODIs.

This is also the most sixes by a captain in an ODI bilateral series.

AB de Villiers is the only captain to score 15 or more sixes in two bilateral ODI series – 20 vs India, 2015, and 16 vs West Indies, 2015.

Jos Buttler’s 19 sixes against the Netherlands in 2022 are the most by a wicketkeeper in a bilateral series.

Buttler struck 14 of those 19 maximums to bring up the second-fastest 150-run knock in ODIs off 65 balls, eventually finishing 162 not out.

Highest Single-Innings Six Tallies in Bilateral Series

Rohit Sharma, AB de Villiers, and Jaskaran Malhotra have scored the most sixes in an ODI innings in a bilateral series, clobbering 16 maximums each.

These records were achieved against Australia (Bengaluru, 2013), the West Indies (Johannesburg, 2015), and Papua New Guinea (Al Amerat, 2021).

Rohit’s 16 sixes helped him bring up his first-ever double century in ODIs (209 runs from 158 balls).

AB de Villiers hammered the fastest fifty (16 balls) and the fastest century (31 balls) during his record-equalling 16-six innings.

Jaskaran Malhotra smashed six of his 16 sixes in a single over against PNG, becoming just the second batter to achieve the feat.

Historical Team Boundaries and Run Aggregates

Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs in a bilateral ODI series, aggregating 558 runs on the six-match South Africa tour in 2018.

The 2013 series between India and Australia recorded the only instance of four batters from the same team (Glenn Maxwell, George Bailey, James Faulkner, and Shane Watson) hitting 10 or more sixes in an ODI bilateral series.

The 2013 series also saw five batters smashing 10-plus sixes in a single bilateral series.

Fakhar Zaman has scored the most fours (65) and most boundaries (71) in an ODI bilateral series, achieved during the 2018 Zimbabwe tour.
