Historical Evolution of the Highest ODI Individual Totals

John Edrich scored the first half-century in ODI cricket. The English batter made 82 runs against Australia on 5 January 1971, in the first ODI match.

The first century in ODI history was recorded by Dennis Amiss of England, who scored 103 runs against Australia on 24 August 1972.

Vivian Richards became the first player to breach the 180-run mark in ODIs, scoring an unbeaten 189 against England on 31 May 1984.

Saeed Anwar held the long-standing record for the highest individual ODI score for 12 years, with his 194 against India on 21 May 1997.

George Munsey has recorded the highest individual score by an Associate Nation batter in ODI cricket. He scored 191 against the Netherlands on 20 March 2025, which unfortunately ended in a loss for his team.

Amiss’s century came in only the second ODI match ever played, and it was also his debut ODI innings.

Fifty-two years later, South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke became the first ODI debutant to breach the 150-run mark when he smashed 150 off 148 balls on debut against New Zealand on 10 February 2025, during the Pakistan Tri-Nation Series at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.


The Elite 200+ Scores in Men’s ODI Cricket

Virender Sehwag scored a towering 219 runs against the West Indies on 8 December 2011, becoming the second man at the time to register a double century.

Rohit Sharma holds the world record for the highest individual score in ODI history, smashing 264 runs off 173 balls against Sri Lanka on 13 November 2014. It is also the highest individual knock in a winning ODI game.

Martin Guptill remains the highest scorer in ICC World Cup history, with an unbeaten 237* against the West Indies on 21 March 2015. And it is Adam Gilchrist’s 149 against Sri Lanka is the highest any batter has scored in an ICC ODI World Cup Final.

Ishan Kishan holds the record for the fastest double century in ODIs. The Indian wicketkeeper reached the milestone in just 126 deliveries against Bangladesh on 10 December 2022.

Pathum Nissanka became the first Sri Lankan to score a double century, with an unbeaten 210* against Afghanistan on 9 February 2024.

Record-Breaking Captaincy and Wicketkeeping Performances

Sanath Jayasuriya scored 189 as captain against India in 2000, which stood as the highest individual score by a captain for over a decade.

The record for the highest individual ODI score by a wicketkeeper is held by MS Dhoni, who smashed an unbeaten 183* against Sri Lanka in 2005.

Highest Scores in Run Chases and Losing Causes

Glenn Maxwell’s famous single-legged knock of 201* against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup is the highest individual score in a successful men’s ODI run chase. It is also the only double century scored while batting second in ODI history.

Maxwell’s knock is also the highest ever score in a World Cup run chase.

Fakhar Zaman holds the record for the highest score in an unsuccessful run chase, scoring 193 against South Africa in 2021. It is one run short of Charles Coventry’s record for the highest individual score in a losing cause in ODI history—an unbeaten 194* against Bangladesh in 2009.

Shane Watson hit an unbeaten 185* against Bangladesh in 2011, which remains one of the highest scores in a successful chase with a high boundary percentage.


Non-Opener Milestones and Technical Feats

Glenn Maxwell’s double century is also the only instance of a non-opener breaking the 200-run mark in ODIs. He was batting at No. 6 in that game.

Zimbabwe’s Coventry’s record 194 came while he was batting at No. 3.

Kapil Dev holds the record for the highest score by a No. 5 batter, with his legendary 175* against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

Luke Ronchi registered the highest score by a No. 7 batter in men’s ODIs, scoring 170* against Sri Lanka in 2015.

Nick Knight holds the record for the highest score while carrying the bat, making 125* against Pakistan in 1996.

Saeed Anwar was the first player to carry his bat in an ODI while scoring a century, finishing on 103* against Zimbabwe in 1995.

David Warner scored 173 against South Africa in 2016, which is the highest individual score in a men’s ODI innings without hitting a six.
