Record-Breaking Age Milestones for Test Skippers

Rashid Khan holds the record as the youngest captain in Test cricket history, leading Afghanistan at the age of 20 years and 350 days against Bangladesh in 2019.

Tatenda Taibu of Zimbabwe is the only other player to captain a Test side before the age of 21, and he remains the youngest to lead a team in a home Test.

MAK Pataudi, the youngest Indian Test captain till date, led this chart for a mighty 42 years, from 1962 to 2004, until Taibu was appointed Zimbabwe captain.

The record for the oldest skipper is held by William Grace, who led England at 50 years and 318 days old against Australia in 1899.

Grace is the only individual to have captained a Test match after turning 50.

In the modern era, Najmul Hossain Shanto became the youngest captain in the World Test Championship, leading Bangladesh at 25 years and 95 days against New Zealand.

At just 20 years and 350 days, Rashid became the youngest captain to claim both a five-wicket haul (5 for 55) and a ten-wicket haul (11 for 104) in a single match.

Taibu holds the distinction of being the youngest skipper to score a Test century, hitting 153 against Bangladesh at the age of 21 years and 245 days.

Graeme Smith set a high bar for young leaders by scoring nine centuries before turning 25, the most by any captain in Test history. Smith led South Africa in 109 Test matches between 2003 and 2014, ultimately becoming the captain leading the side in the most matches in Test history.

Denis Atkinson is the youngest captain to achieve the rare double of a century and a five-wicket haul in the same match, scoring 219 and taking 5 for 56 against Australia in 1955.
