Key Insights – Key Partnerships in IPL

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers have recorded the highest partnership in IPL history for any wicket, putting together 229 runs for the second wicket against Gujarat Lions in 2016.

Notably, Kohli and de Villiers scored a century each, making it the first instance of two batters bringing up hundreds in the same IPL match.

KL Rahul-Quinton de Kock and Shubman Gill-Sai Sudharsan have stitched the joint-highest opening partnership in the IPL.

Rahul-de Kock were the first with a double century stand for the first wicket, partnering for an unbeaten 210 for LSG against KKR in 2022.

Gill-Sudharsan levelled the record in 2024 with a 210-run stand for GT against CSK in Ahmedabad.

Gill and Sudharsan are the only pair to stitch two double century partnerships for the first wicket in the IPL.

Kohli and de Villiers are the other pair with two double hundred stands, with both their partnerships coming for the second wicket.

There have been only four partnerships of 150 or more runs for the third wicket. The highest is 165 by Robin Uthappa and Shivam Dube for CSK against RCB in 2022.

Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan were the first pair to score a century partnership in the IPL (112 runs for the second wicket in 2008).

The 100-run stand between Harbhajan Singh and Jagadeesha Suchith is the only century partnership for the seventh wicket in the IPL.

Likewise, there’s only a single fifty-plus partnership for the ninth and tenth wicket each in the IPL.

Shikhar Dhawan is the only opener to have featured in a fifty partnership for the 10th wicket, adding an unbeaten 55 runs with Mohit Rathee in 2023.

Dhruv Jurel and Sanju Samson are the only pair with two century partnerships for the fourth wicket.

Kohli-de Villiers, Faf du Plessis-Glenn Maxwell and KL Rahul-Deepak Hooda are the three pairs with two or more century stands for the third wicket.
