Top Bowling Spells on Debut – Home and Away

Scotland’s Charlie Cassell has claimed the best bowling figures on ODI debut. He returned with 7 for 21 in just 5.4 overs against Oman in 2024. This is also the best figures by a debutant at home.

South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, meanwhile, has the best bowling returns on ODI debut among full-member bowlers. He delivered a spell of 6 for 16 in eight overs against Bangladesh in the 2015 Mirpur ODI. This is also the best spell by a debutant in an overseas ODI.

Sri Lanka’s Uvais Karnain was the first debutant to take a five-wicket haul in ODIs. He claimed figures of 5 for 26 against New Zealand in 1984.

Taskin Ahmed’s 5 for 28 (2014) and Allan Donald’s 5 for 29 (1991), both against India, are the two five-wicket hauls to end up on the losing side on ODI debuts.

Fastest Milestones and Notable Economy Rates on First ODI Appearance

Cassell needed just 19 deliveries (3.1 overs) to complete his five-for. This is the fastest recorded five-wicket haul by a bowler on ODI debut.

Notably, no spinner has managed to take a five-wicket haul on their ODI debuts. The best figures among spinners on debut belong to Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam, who returned 4 for 11 in seven overs against Zimbabwe in the 2014 Mirpur ODI.

West Indies’ James Adams has bowled the most economical spell as an ODI debutant (minimum 12 balls bowled). He had an economy of 0.5 while taking a wicket for two runs in four overs against Pakistan in 1992.

Sri Lanka’s Jeffrey Vandersay has recorded the worst economy rate for an ODI debut spell (minimum 12 balls bowled). He conceded 34 runs across two overs to record an economy of 17 against New Zealand in the 2015 Christchurch ODI.

West Indies’ Andy Roberts (2/16 vs SL, 1975), England’s Devon Malcolm (2/19 vs NZ, 1990) and Bermuda’s Dwayne Leverock (1/14 vs CAN, 2006) bowled five maidens each, the joint most by bowlers on ODI debuts.


Oldest and Youngest Debut Bowlers Records in ODI

Namibia’s Lennie Louw, meanwhile, is the oldest debutant to pick up a wicket. He was 43 years and 236 days old when he took 1 for 60 in 10 overs on his debut against Zimbabwe in 2003. Notably, this was his lone appearance in international cricket.

Taskin is the youngest to pick up a five-for on ODI debut at the age of 19 years and 75 days, while Canada’s Austin Codrington is the oldest to achieve the feat at the age of 27 years and 173 days.

Bangladesh’s Mohammad Sharif is the youngest bowler to take a wicket on ODI debut. He claimed figures of 1 for 31 in 10 overs against Zimbabwe at the age of 15 years and 116 days in the 2001 Harare ODI.

Sharif is also the second-youngest player to make his debut in ODI cricket, behind Pakistan’s Hasan Raza (14 years and 233 days).
