Highest Individual ODI Score in a Winning Cause

Cricket’s traditional limited-overs format, the ODI, may have lost its shine to the much newer T20 format, but still, it has a great history behind it. Much had to do with the competitiveness with which the game has been played in the last 5 decades.

The game of ODI cricket has improved leaps & bounds in those years, and this includes shattering all the pre-existing records as well as creating new ones. Moreover, many legendary players have made a name for themselves in the world of cricket due to their breathtaking performances in the longest white-ball format of the game.

Key Insights

Rohit Sharma has recorded the highest ODI score in winning causes. His 264 helped India trump Sri Lanka by 153 runs. This is obviously the highest individual score in this format.

Sharma’s knock consisted of 33 fours, the most by a batter in an ODI innings. No batter has smashed more than 25 fours in a single outing.

Glenn Maxwell is the only batter to smash a double hundred in a successful run chase in ODIs. His unbeaten 201 helped Australia chase down a 292-run target set by Afghanistan in a 2023 World Cup match. This is also the lone double century by a non-opener in ODIs.

Not a single batter who scored a double century has ended up on the losing side thus far. And Sharma has three double tons in victories, the most by a batter in ODIs.

Martin Guptill’s unbeaten 237 against the West Indies is the highest score in a winning cause in the ODI World Cup. His knock propelled New Zealand to 393, which they defended by 143 runs.

Virender Sehwag and Sharma (208) are the only captains to score a double century in an ODI win. Sehwag’s 219 is the highest ODI score among captains.

MS Dhoni, meanwhile, has the highest ODI score in a victory among wicketkeepers. His unbeaten 183 helped India chase 299 runs against Sri Lanka in 2005. This is also the highest score by a keeper in all ODIs.

Virat Kohli has scored 43 centuries in winning causes in ODIs, the most by a batter. Sachin Tendulkar (33) is the other batter with more than 30 hundreds in wins.
