Key Insights on Highest Run Aggregates in T20I Cricket
Record-Breaking Totals and High-Scoring Matches
South Africa and the West Indies share the record for the highest match aggregate in T20Is. Both teams scored 517 runs in two innings combined in the 2023 Centurion T20I.
In that same match, South Africa and the West Indies also created two more records. The Proteas made the highest successful run chase of 259 runs, while the West Indies’ 258 for 5 ended up as the highest team total in a losing cause in T20Is.
On March 18, 2016, England and South Africa engaged in a run feast at the Wankhede Stadium, amassing a record-breaking 459 runs, the highest run aggregate ever in a T20 World Cup match.
South Africa and Australia shared the first instance of two teams aggregating 400 runs in a T20I match. The Proteas scored 201 for 4, while Australia replied with 199 for 7 in the 2006 Johannesburg T20I, which South Africa won by two runs.
Individual Milestones, Boundary Records and Scoring Rates
The 2023 Centurion T20I recorded one individual hundred each from the West Indies and South Africa. Johnson Charles scored 118 off 46 for the Caribbean side, while Quinton de Kock countered it with 100 from 44. This was only the third instance of two batters scoring centuries in the same T20I match.
The first instance of two hundreds in the same T20I came in the 2016 Lauderhill game played between India and the West Indies. Evin Lewis’ 100 off 49 helped the West Indies put up 245 for 6, while KL Rahul’s unbeaten 110 brought India (244/4) pretty close to the target.
India’s 244 for 4 is the highest total by a team in an unsuccessful run chase in T20Is.
Bulgaria and Gibraltar recorded the highest run rate in a T20I match. Both teams collectively scored 487 runs at a run rate of 14.18 in 34.2 overs in a 2025 match.
Five batters scored fifty-plus knocks in the Bulgaria-Gibraltar clash, the joint-most fifty-plus scores in a T20I match.
The Bulgaria-Gibraltar match also recorded 41 sixes, the most by two teams in a single T20I match.
India-Australia (Guwahati, 2023) and Japan-Singapore (Bangkok, 2024) share the record for the most fours in a single T20I match, with 49 boundaries each coming in both games.
Notable Team Performance Streaks
India and Australia aggregated 400-plus runs in three consecutive matches in the 2023 T20I series. This is the only instance of two teams scoring 400 or more runs in three matches in a bilateral T20I series.
The lowest T20I match aggregate is 23, shared by Isle of Man-Spain (2023) and Mongolia-Singapore (2024). The Isle of Man and Mongolia scored 10 runs each, the joint-second lowest team total, with Spain and Singapore scoring 13 each in response.
Spain took only two balls to chase the 11-run target against the Isle of Man, making it the fastest run chase in T20Is.
