Key Insights

England’s Jack Hobbs and Wilfred Rhodes stitched together the first 300-plus run partnership in Tests. The pair added 323 runs for the second wicket against Australia in the second innings of the 1912 MCG Test.

Three 300-plus run partnerships each by Herschelle Gibbs-Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla-Jacques Kallis are the joint-most by a pair in Test cricket.

All three partnerships of 300 or more runs between Amla and Kallis ended up in wins for South Africa, the most by a pair in Tests.

Gibbs and Smith shared two triple-century stands in South Africa, the joint-most by a pair in home Tests. Ricky Ponting-Michael Clarke (Australia), Mahela Jayawardene-Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka), and Kane Williamson-Henry Nicholls (New Zealand) are the other pairs.

Amla and Kallis, on the other hand, recorded two of their three triple-hundred stands away from home. Don Bradman-Bill Ponsford (Australia) and Joe Root-Harry Brook (England) are the other pairs with two such stands in away Tests.

Bradman and Ponsford stitched both of their 300-plus partnerships against England, the joint-most by a pair against a Test team. Interestingly, both partnerships came in consecutive matches in the 1934 Ashes – 388 at Leeds and 451 at The Oval. This is the only pair with triple-century stands in back-to-back Tests.

India’s Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman had two triple-century partnerships against Australia. And both their stands came for the fifth wicket, the only pair with two stands of 300 or more runs for the fifth or lower wicket in Tests.

The second 300-plus partnership of 363 runs between Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan against England in 2006 is the highest in a losing cause in Tests.

Jayawardene and Sangakkara, meanwhile, have recorded the highest in a Test win, aggregating 624 runs for the third wicket against South Africa in 2006. This is also the highest partnership for any wicket in this format.
