Key Insights – Highest Run-Scorers in a 2-Match Test Series

Top Run-Getters & Batting Averages

Sanath Jayasuriya holds the record for the most runs in a two-match Test series, aggregating 571 runs in three innings against India at home in 1997.

In the first match of the series, Jayasuriya hammered a 340-run knock, making him the first Sri Lankan Test triple centurion. His 340 helped Sri Lanka declare their innings on 952 for 6, the highest Test total by a team.

Wally Hammond’s average of 563.00 against New Zealand while scoring 563 runs is the highest by a batter in a two-match Test series. Hammond’s 563 runs are also the most by a batter in an away Test series of two matches.

Double Century & Captaincy Records

Hammond (vs NZ, 1933), Thilan Samaraweera (vs PAK, 2009), and Brendon McCullum (vs IND, 2014) are the three batters to smash two double centuries in a two-match Test series. McCullum is the only one to achieve this feat as a captain.

McCullum has also aggregated the most runs as a captain in a two-Test series, collecting 535 runs against India at home in 2014. Mahela Jayawardene is the other skipper to score more than 500 runs, having scored 510 runs against South Africa in 2006.

374 of Jayawardene’s runs came in the second innings of the Colombo (SSC) Test, which is the highest Test score by a Sri Lankan batter. This is also the highest score by a captain in a two-Test series.

Wicketkeeper & Other Notable Records

Sri Lanka’s Aravinda de Silva is the only batter to score three centuries in two series (vs PAK and IND) of two Tests each.

540 runs scored by Andy Flower on the 2000 India tour are the most by a wicketkeeper in a two-match Test series. Flower is the only keeper-batter to amass 400-plus runs and score two hundreds in two Test series of two matches each. Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal is the other keeper with two hundreds in a two-match Test series.
