Key Insights on Most Prolific Run Scorers in Test Cricket History

All-Time Records for Most Runs in 75 Successive Test Innings

Sir Don Bradman holds the record for scoring the most runs in 75 successive Test innings, as he did in 25 & 50 innings. The legendary batter accumulated a staggering 6786 runs in between his 5th & 79th innings. In this phase, Bradman scored 12 double centuries, including an unbeaten 173 in what was 79th and penultimate innings.

Yet another batter, Steven Smith, ranks second with 4878 runs that he accumulated between innings 47 and 121.

Third comes the West Indies legend, Brian Lara, who hit a purple patch between 139 and 219 innings, scoring 4,840 runs at an incredible average of 66.30 with 16 centuries to his name.

9 other batters have crossed the 4500 run mark in their respective peak 75-innings sequence in Tests, namely Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Gary Sobers, Matthew Hayden, Mohammad Yousuf, Vivian Richards, Jacques Kallis, Sachin Tendulkar (4550), and Virat Kohli (4521).

Highest Batting Averages and Century Milestones in 75 Test Innings in Row (Minimum 4000 runs)

The above-mentioned batters have scored 4500 or more in a given 75-inning sequence. If we relax the criteria to a minimum of 4000 runs, then 34 such batters have surpassed the mark.

Among them, Sir Don Bradman’s average of 104.40 is the highest, and no one is even close to the legend.

Second in the list is former Aussie skipper, Ricky Ponting, who made 4767 runs at an average of 75.67, with 18 centuries.

The other batters to have an average of over 70 are: Steven Smith (75.05), Kumar Sangakkara (70.78), Gary Sobers (72.89), and Jacques Kallis (73.40).

Shivnarine Chanderpaul (3886) averaged 70.65, but he hasn’t completed 4000 Test runs in a 75-inning sequence.

Sir Don Bradman has smashed the most Test centuries in 75 successive innings in the format (28). Steven Smith (20) is the only other batter to have scored 20 or more Test centuries, and Matthew Hayden comes third with 19 Test centuries.

Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Mohammad Yousuf, Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Virat Kohli, and Sunil Gavaskar all have scored 18 Test centuries each in 75 successive innings.

Leading Strike Rates and Consistency of Prolific Test Batters

Test batting greats like Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sir Jack Hobbs, Kane Williamson, Javed Miandad, Younis Khan, AB de Villiers, Virender Sehwag, Alastair Cook, Joe Root, Hashim Amla, Everton Weekes, among others, have crossed the 4000-run mark.

Virender Sehwag has the best strike rate (80.00) for a batter who has scored 4000 or more runs in 75 consecutive Test innings. The next best strike rate, 66.03, was by Aussie opener Matthew Hayden, who made 4579 runs.

In games where data is available, Brian Lara (4840 runs at a SR of 60.36), Ricky Ponting (4767 runs at a SR of 60.24) Virat Kohli (4521 runs at a SR of 61.49), and Joe Root (4036 runs at a SR of 62.31) all have a strike rate of 60 or more.

David Warner’s SR is 81.85, but he didn’t fulfill the criteria of 4000 runs as he made 3987 runs in a given 75-inning sequence.
