Elite Individual Milestones in Overseas Run Chases

Virat Kohli is the only batter to score 3000-plus runs in away chases in ODIs.

Kohli is the only batter with more than 10 centuries in run chases in away ODIs. Remarkably, he is also the only one with 10-plus centuries in successful chases away from home. He is also the only batter to have 20+ centuries in successful ODI run chases home and away.

Kohli is also the lone batter to aggregate 2000-plus runs in successful chases in away ODIs. And he is just behind Sachin Tendulkar in overall ODI run chase aggregates.

David Warner has scored the most runs in a calendar year in away ODI chases, amassing 548 runs at an average of 54.80 in 11 innings in 2016.

Shikhar Dhawan’s 1799 runs are the most by an opener in away ODI chases.

Record Batting Averages and Strike Rates in Away Chases

AB de Villiers has the highest batting average in away ODI chases (minimum 1000 balls faced), scoring 1657 runs at 61.37 in 40 innings.

Shahid Afridi has the highest batting strike rate, having struck at 129.44 while scoring 1376 runs in 61 away chases.

MS Dhoni has the highest batting average in successful chases in away ODIs, smashing 1095 runs at a mind-blowing average of 156.42 in 26 innings (minimum 1000 balls faced).

Dhoni remained unbeaten in 19 of the 26 innings, the most by a batter in successful chases in overseas ODIs.

Overall, MS was not out in 20 of his 61 outings, again the most by a batter in away ODI run chases.

Highest Individual Scores and Iconic Venue Performances

Tillakaratne Dilshan scored seven centuries while opening in overseas ODI chases, the most by a batter in that position.

Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman has struck the highest individual score in an away ODI chase, scoring 193 from 155 balls against South Africa in the 2021 Johannesburg ODI.

Zaman’s 193 is the highest individual score in an unsuccessful run chase in ODIs.

Note: Glenn Maxwell’s double century in the successful run chase against Afghanistan in ODI World Cup 2023 comes in a neutral venue. However that is the highest individual score by any batter in any successful ODI chase. It also came away from home for Maxi.

Viv Richards scored 809 of his 1593 runs in Australia, the most by a batter in an overseas country in ODI chases.
