Jacques Kallis is the leading run-scorer for South Africa in Test cricket. He aggregated 13,206 runs in 278 innings at an average of 55.25.

Kallis also leads the charts for most centuries and fifty-plus scores for South Africa. He racked up 45 hundreds, the second-most among all Test batters, and 103 fifty-plus scores, the third-most in the format.

Kallis’ average is only bettered by Graeme Pollock among the South Africans with at least 1,000 runs and 20 innings. The former left-hand batter averaged 60.97 while scoring 2,256 runs in 41 innings.

Kallis scored 7,035 of his 13,206 runs in South Africa, the fifth-most by a batter on home soil in Tests. His remaining runs, 6,171, came in overseas conditions, the most for a South African.

Arthur Nourse (2,960 at 53.81) and AB de Villiers (8,765 at 50.66) are the other Proteas batters with a 50-plus Test average. ABD is also the only player in history to end a career with 50+ average in both Tests and ODIs.

Graeme Smith scored 8,647 of his 9,253 Test runs as captain, the most for South Africa. This is also the most runs by any captain in Test cricket. He also smashed 25 centuries as skipper, again the most in Tests.

9,018 of Smith’s runs came as an opener, the most for South Africa and the third-most in Test cricket.

Mark Boucher scored all of his 5,498 runs as a wicketkeeper for South Africa. Overall, he aggregated 5,515 runs as a keeper, the second most in Tests.

Smith amassed 1,656 runs in 2008, the most by a South African batter in a calendar year in Tests.

Wiaan Mulder has racked up the highest individual Test score for South Africa. He remained unbeaten on 367 against Zimbabwe in the 2025 Bulawayo Test. This is also the highest score by a batter on his Test captaincy debut.

Graeme Smith is the fastest South African batter to score 1,000, 3,000, 4,000, 6,000, and 7,000 runs in Test cricket.
