Record-Breaking Totals in Losses and Historic Run Chases

The West Indies have recorded the highest team total in a losing cause in T20Is. The Caribbean side posted 258 for 5 against South Africa in the first innings of the 2023 Centurion T20I, though they failed to defend the total as the Proteas chased the 259-run target with seven balls to spare.

With that, South Africa shattered the record for the highest successful run chase in T20Is. The Proteas also became the first team to hunt down a 250-plus target in the shortest format.

The clash between the West Indies and South Africa also recorded the highest match aggregate in T20Is. Both teams scored 517 runs combined across the two innings in the Centurion T20I.


Unsuccessful Chases and Home Ground Heartbreaks

India’s 244 for 4 is the highest team total in an unsuccessful run chase in T20Is. The Men in Blue lost the contest by a mere run against the Windies while chasing 245 in the 2016 Lauderhill T20I.

New Zealand’s 243 for 6 is the highest total by a team in a losing cause in a home T20I match. The Kiwis failed to defend the total as Australia overhauled it in 18.5 overs in the 2018 Auckland T20I.

South Africa and New Zealand have recorded five or more defeats despite scoring 200-plus totals at home in T20Is.

The West Indies and South Africa are the two teams to lose 10 or more matches after scoring 200-plus totals in T20Is. The two teams have also failed to defend 200-plus totals in five or more T20Is.

South Africa have lost three or more matches each after scoring 200-plus runs against England and India in T20Is.

The West Indies scored five 200-plus totals in 2025, with four totals ending on the losing side, the most by a team in a calendar year in T20Is.
