Key Insights

Two batters have scores of 333 in Test cricket. One of them belongs to Graham Gooch, making it the highest in India-England Tests. He brought up the knock at the Lord’s in 1990.

Gooch’s score is also the highest by a skipper in Tests between these two sides. Virat Kohli (235), Joe Root (218), and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (203*) are the other captains with double tons.

Alastair Cook batted for 773 minutes in the 2011 Birmingham Test, the longest for a batter in an innings in India-England games. He scored 294 runs, the third-highest score on this list, with the help of 33 boundaries.

Twelve sixes smashed by Yashasvi Jaiswal in his 214-run knock are the most in an India vs England Test innings. Jaiswal and Ian Botham are the only batters to hit five or more sixes in two India-England Test innings.

Jaiswal is the only batter to convert his first two centuries into double hundreds in India-England Tests.

Karun Nair’s unbeaten 303 made him the third batter to convert his maiden Test hundred into a triple hundred.

Vinoo Mankad’s 184 is the highest score in a losing cause in India versus England Tests. Despite his efforts, India lost the 1952 Lord’s Test by eight wickets.

Bryan Valentine has recorded the highest score in India-England matches on Test debut. He aggregated 136 runs in the second innings at Bombay Gymkhana in 1933.

Sunil Gavaskar is the only double centurion in the fourth innings of an India-England Test. His 221-run knock almost handed India a win in the 1979 Oval Test.

Joe Root’s unbeaten 142 is the highest score in a successful run chase in India versus England Tests. His knock helped England gun down India’s 378-run target in the 2022 Birmingham Test.
