India’s Highest Test Totals in a Losing Cause

Test matches are won by the bowlers taking 20 wickets for their team is a proven fact but at the same time, their batters need to put a competitive score on board for a fight. In many cases, a total over 400 by a team at least saves them from a defeat and yields them a draw, if not a win. However, there are occasions, when a team falters and loses the game even after scoring a comfortable amount of runs in one or both their innings. This could be down to the fact that their opposition was more dominant.

So from a Team India standpoint, here are the occasions where they lost the Test match even though they had posted a sizeable total on the board. Here is India’s highest Test Total on a Losing Cause.

Key Stats

532 is the largest Test total posted by India in a losing cause and it came in the infamous Test match against Australia at the SCG. This is also the 12th-largest total in overall Test history, resulting in a losing cause.

India had posted another total of over 500 but still ended up losing, and that was at Leeds against England in 1967.

Team India has 19 totals of over 400 Tests that have resulted in losses. Six of them came in home conditions, Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy stadium accounted for three of those instances, and the others came each in Chennai, Hyderbad, and Mumbai, respectively.

Another interesting thing to note is that 2 of the instances where India got defeated even after scoring 400 or more came in this calendar year (2024), one at Hyderabad and the other at Bengaluru.

If we consider the average innings total to be 300 in Tests, then India has scored 300 or more 64 times and still lost the Test.

On the contrary, there have 22 instances of them getting bowled out for a total less than 100 in a Test innings and losing the Test match. Their lowest being 36 at Adelaide.

445 – This is the highest total posted by India in the 4th innings of a Test in which they lost. Similarly, they scored 532 in the 2nd innings of a Test to lose and 510 came in the third innings. Their highest first-innings total in a defeated Test match is 424 and it came at Bengaluru against Australia in 1998.

759 – This is the highest match total (across both their innings) posted by India to lose a Test. This happened in Adelaide against Australia in the eventful 2014/15 Border Gavaskar Trophy series. Find out India’s record in each Australian venues here.
