Key Insights on All-Time Leading Run Scorers in Test Cricket

Milestone Records and Test Career Batting Benchmarks

Sachin Tendulkar, the God of Cricket, has scored the most runs in Test cricket. He has amassed 15291 runs in 200 matches with an impressive average of 53.78.

Tendulkar has also smashed the most centuries (51) and fifty-plus scores (119) in Tests.

Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara and Tendulkar took 195 innings to reach 10000 Test runs, making them the fastest to the landmark in terms of innings.

Don Bradman holds the unbreakable record for the highest batting average in Tests (minimum 20 innings). He aggregated 6996 runs at an impressive average of 99.94 in 80 innings.

England’s Joe Root is the leading run getter among the currently active batters in Test cricket. (Check out Root’s year-by-year career batting progression in Tests here.)

Home, Away, and Venue-Specific Scoring Feats

Tendulkar, Root, Ricky Ponting (Australia), Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) and Jacques Kallis (South Africa) are the five batters with 7000-plus runs at home in Tests.

Tendulkar, meanwhile, is the only batter to score more than 8000 runs in overseas Tests. He aggregated 8705 runs in 106 away Tests (176 innings).

Jayawardene scored 2921 of his 11814 runs at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. This is the most runs scored by a batter at a single venue in Tests.

Jayawardene is, in fact, the only batter with 2000-plus Test runs at two different venues, with Galle International Stadium (2382 runs) being the other venue.

Bradman has amassed the most runs against an opponent in Tests, having scored 5028 runs in 63 innings against England.

Individual Test Performance and Calendar Year Records

Brian Lara holds the record for the highest individual score in Test cricket. He smashed an unbeaten 400 against England in 2004, which included 43 fours and 4 massive sixes.

Bradman has scored the most runs in a bilateral Test series, having aggregated 974 runs in seven innings in the 1930 Ashes.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf created a record in 2006, scoring 1788 runs in 19 innings, the most by a batter in a calendar year in Tests.

Viv Richards (1710 in 1976) and Root (1708 in 2021) are the only other batters to aggregate 1700-plus runs in a year in Tests.
