West Indies’ Gary Sobers has scored the most runs for a batter batting at No. 6 or lower positions in an away Test series. He aggregated 722 runs in the five-match England tour in 1966.

Sobers’ 722 runs are also the most by a No. 6 batter in an overseas Test series. This is also the secondmost runs by a captain in an away Test series.

Sobers’ run tally included three centuries, the most by a No. 6 or lower batter in an away Test series.

Sobers peppered his 722 runs with 95 fours, the most by a No. 6 or lower batter in an away Test series.

West Indies’ Shimron Hetmyer has struck the most sixes, hitting 15 on the two-match Bangladesh tour in 2018.

New Zealand’s Craig McMillan astonishingly averaged 237 while scoring 237 runs in three innings on the two-match India tour in 2003. This is the highest average by a No. 6 or lower batter in an away Test series (minimum 100 balls faced).


Position-Specific Batting Records in Away Test Series

Adam Gilchrist’s 473 runs on the 2002 South Africa tour are the most by a No. 7 batter in an away Test series.

West Indies’ Gerry Alexander aggregated 236 of his 484 runs on the 1960/61 Australia tour at No. 8, the most by a batter in that position in an away Test series. 

Overall, Alexander scored 484 runs at an average of 60.50, the most by a wicketkeeper while batting at the No. 6 or lower position on an overseas Test tour.

Alexander’s tally included six fifty-plus scores, the joint-most by a batter at the No. 6 or lower position in an away Test series, along with Pakistan’s Wasim Raja (1977 West Indies tour) and India’s Ravindra Jadeja (2025 England tour).

India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the most runs as a No. 9 batter, tallying 247 runs in 10 innings on the 2014 England tour. His tally included three fifty-plus scores, the most in that position.

Ben Stokes has struck the highest score by a No. 6 or lower batter in an away Test. He smashed 258 off 198 balls against South Africa in the 2016 Cape Town Test. This is also the secondhighest score by a No. 6 or lower Test batter.
