Most Runs Scored by a Team in Last 5 Overs in a T20I Innings

The last five overs of a T20I innings can make or break a batting team’s fortunes. In this phase, the batters need to step up to provide the desired finishing touches to their team’s innings.

To do that, batters accelerate the scoring rate manifold by smacking the bowlers for boundaries and sixes. During the run feast, many teams end up accumulating the most runs between the 16th and 20th overs.

Record-Breaking Team Totals and Milestone Achievements

Nepal became the first team to hammer 100-plus runs in the last five overs in a T20I innings. Nepal scored 108 runs, which helped them reach 314 for 3 against Mongolia in the 2023 Asian Games. 

Nepal’s 314 for 3 also made them the first team to post a 300-plus total in a T20I innings.

Zimbabwe went past Nepal’s total in 2024, hammering 344 for 4 against Gambia in the T20 World Cup Africa regional qualifiers, the highest team total in T20Is.

Zimbabwe scored 116 of the 344 runs in the last five overs, the most by a team in that phase in a T20I innings.

Nepal are the only team to score 90 or more runs twice between the 16th and 20th overs in T20Is.


Boundary Dominance and Power-Hitting Records

Zimbabwe smashed 14 sixes in their 116-run carnage, the most sixes by a team in the last five overs in a T20I innings. They scored a total of 27 sixes against Gambia, the second-most by a team in a T20I innings. 

Zimbabwe scored 104 of the 116 runs alone through five fours and 14 sixes, making it the most runs by a team through boundaries in the last five overs in a T20I innings.

The West Indies and England recorded the highest combined run aggregate of 173 in the last five overs of both innings in the 2023 St George’s T20I. The Windies scored 87 runs in the first innings, while England hammered 86 runs during a successful run chase of 223 runs.


Individual Brilliance in the Final Overs

Sikandar Raza contributed 76 of Zimbabwe’s 116 runs, the joint-most by a batter in the last five overs in a T20I innings. Raza went on to complete his hundred off 33 balls, the fastest by a full-member batter in T20Is.

David Miller is the other batter to collect 76 runs in the last five overs for South Africa against Bangladesh in the 2017 Potchefstroom T20I. It helped South Africa score 90 runs in that phase.
