Key Insights on Unsuccessful T20I Hundreds
Exclusive Club of Batters with Multiple T20I Centuries in Defeats
Leslie Dunbar was the first batter to score multiple T20I centuries in losing causes. The Serbian batter has thus far smashed two hundreds against Bulgaria, with both knocks ending up on the losing side.
Samoa’s Darius Visser levelled Dunbar’s unwanted record in July 2025. Interestingly, his centuries against Hong Kong (110*) and Malaysia (107*) came in consecutive innings in the 2025 Asia Pacific Cricket Champions Trophy. This is the only instance of a batter scoring hundreds in consecutive T20I losses.
Visser, meanwhile, became just the sixth batter to smash two successive centuries in T20Is.
Most of the above batters have registered their losing centuries since 2019, with nine instances coming alone in 2022, the most in a calendar year.
Highest Individual Score and Most Runs in T20I Losses
Chris Gayle was the first-ever batter whose century went in vain. In fact, he crossed the triple-digit figures for the first time in the format, scoring 117 against South Africa in the 2007 T20 World Cup’s opening game.
Shane Watson’s 124 against India in the 2016 Sydney T20I is the highest by a batter in a losing cause. The Australian all-rounder helped his team reach 197 in the first innings.
Mahmudullah scored 1611 runs for Bangladesh in a losing cause in T20Is, the most by a batter in this format.
T20I Hundreds in Losses for Teams
Indian batters have slammed the most T20I hundreds, with the number going above 20. But Indian batters have also scored the most T20I centuries in losing causes, with four batters’ efforts ending up on the wrong side.
Australia, Hong Kong, South Africa, and the West Indies are the other teams with two or more batters with tons in T20I losses.
T20I Tons in Failed Chases
Seven batters have scored T20I centuries in unsuccessful run chases, with Babar Hayat (Hong Kong) being the first to do so. The other six batters are KL Rahul (India), Liam Livingstone (England), Suryakumar Yadav (India), David Miller (South Africa), Abdul Waheed (Saudi Arabia), and Izaz Ali (Slovenia).
