Key Insights on Leading Wicket Takers Among Off-Spinners in Test Cricket
Record Breaking Wicket Takers and Milestone Feats
Muttiah Muralitharan has picked up the most wickets among off-spinners in Test cricket, with 800 scalps to his name. This is also the most wickets taken by any bowler in this format.
The Sri Lankan tweaker has bagged 67 five-wicket hauls and 22 ten-wicket hauls, the most by an off-spinner in Tests.
Muralitharan is the only off-spinner to collect more than 100 wickets at three different grounds in Tests, taking the most (166) at Colombo (SSC), followed by Kandy (117) and Galle (111).
Muralitharan has picked up the most Test wickets in a calendar year among off-spinners, getting 90 scalps in 21 innings in 2006.
Ravichandran Ashwin, meanwhile, has the lowest strike rate, grabbing 537 wickets at 50.7 in 200 innings.
Jim Laker has the lowest bowling average among off spinners who’ve bowled at least 10,000 balls in Tests, taking 193 wickets at 21.24 in 86 innings.
Off-Spinner Performance in Different Conditions and Continents
Muralitharan picked up 493 of his wickets in Sri Lanka, the most by an off-spinner at home in Tests. Ravichandran Ashwin (383) is the only other offie with 300-plus scalps at home.
Murali’s other 307 wickets came outside Sri Lanka, again the most by an off-spinner in away-from-home Tests. He trails Shane Warne (389) among all tweakers.
Muralitharan picked up the most wickets among off-spinners in Asian conditions, taking 612 scalps in 171 outings.
Muralitharan took 120 of his 800 scalps in SENA countries, the most by an Asian off-spinner in Tests.
Ashwin, meanwhile, has snared the most Test wickets against SENA teams among off-spinners, taking 361 of his wickets in 137 innings against these four opponents.
Nathan Lyon is the only non-Asian off-spinner to bag more than 100 wickets in Asia. He is also the only non-Asian off-spinner to claim more than 250 victims against Asian teams.
Lyon is the only off-spinner to take 400-plus wickets outside Asia, with around 65 per cent of his scalps coming at home in Australia.
Extraordinary Feats in Test Match and Series Bowling
Australia’s Hugh Trumble took all of his 141 wickets against England, the most by an off-spinner against a Test team. Muralitharan (vs ENG, IND & SA), Ashwin (AUS & ENG), Lyon (IND & ENG), and Lance Gibbs (AUS & ENG) have taken 100 or more wickets against multiple opponents.
Jim Laker is the only off-spinner to snare all 10 wickets in a Test innings, claiming the best bowling figures of 10 for 53 against Australia in the 1956 Manchester Test.
Laker has taken the most wickets in a bilateral series among off-spinners, returning with 46 scalps across 10 innings in the 1956 Ashes.
