Key Insights

South Africa have the most batters who scored centuries on their ODI debuts. Four debutants have scored an ODI century each for the Proteas.

England’s Dennis Amiss was the first batter to smash a hundred on debut in ODI cricket. Amiss was, in fact, the first-ever batter to reach the 100-mark in an ODI innings. He scored a match-winning 103 against Australia in the 1972 Manchester ODI match.

Dennis Amiss is also the first cricketer to score an ODI World Cup century, achieving this with a match-winning 137 against India in the opening match of the inaugural 1975 World Cup.

Twenty years later, Andy Flower became the first batter from an associate nation to bring up a hundred on ODI debut. He scored an unbeaten 115 against Sri Lanka for Zimbabwe, who were an associate member back in February 1992. Flower is the lone debutant to achieve the feat in the ODI World Cup.

Hong Kong and Scotland are the other associates to have a debutant centurion in ODI cricket. Mark Chapman aggregated 124 not out for Hong Kong against the UAE in 2015. Interestingly, Chapman was the first batter to reach the triple-digit figures for Hong Kong in ODIs. Michael English amassed 107 for Scotland against Namibia in 2024. Matthew Breetzke has smashed the highest individual score by a debutant in ODIs. He scored 150 for South Africa against New Zealand in 2025. Breetzke bettered Desmond Haynes’ 47-year-old record of a 148-run knock against Australia.

West Indies’ Amir Jangoo has recorded the fastest ODI century by a debutant. He needed 80 deliveries to raise his ton against Bangladesh in 2024.

England are the only team to have more than 20 debutants with a fifty-plus score in ODI cricket.
