Pat Cummins assumed Australia’s Test captaincy in late 2021. And he got off the mark with an Ashes series victory against England.
It was the start of a leadership stint that has been a game-changer for Australia. A year later, Cummins got the reigns of the ODI side as well.
Since then, the pacer has led his men quite well with his tactical acumen. That also resulted in Australia winning the World Test Championship (WTC) and Cricket World Cup (CWC) in 2023.

Cummins has so far led Australia in Tests and ODIs. And his first wins in both formats as captain came against England almost a year apart in 2021 and 2022.
Earlier in 2025, when Cummins led Australia in the Sydney Test against India, he became the 11th Australian to lead the team in 50 matches across formats. His overall wins also put him in the top 10 successful captains from Australia.
Eight Australian skippers have registered 20 or more Test wins, including Cummins. And he took 33 Tests to win 20 matches, the third-fewest matches after Steve Waugh (27) and Ricky Ponting (28).
Cummins is among the 13 Australian skippers who have led in and won more than 10 matches in ODI cricket.
Cummins is the only other Australian captain after Ponting to win multiple ICC tournaments. He was at the helm when Australia clinched the WTC and CWC in 2023.
The right-arm pacer has been an effective leader in all aspects. There’s still a lot to come under his tenure while Australia maintain their dominance in world cricket.

Pat Cummins is only the second Australian captain to take more than 100 wickets in Test cricket. The late Richie Benaud was the first one to cross the barrier to end up with 138 scalps in 28 Tests.
Even across the format, it’s the same story. Only these two bowling captains have 100-plus wickets in all formats combined. In fact, Cummins leads the chart with over 150 wickets.
If we look at the overall Test record, then he is among the 10 skippers with 100 or more wickets. Cummins will surpass Benaud’s tally soon and trail Pakistan’s Imran Khan (187). When it comes to all formats, he became the ninth skipper to bag 150-plus wickets.
Eight Australian Test captains have taken 20-plus wickets in the format. And Cummins is among the three who average below 25, while his strike rate is the best among all.
In ODI format, Cummins is among the four skippers with more than 20 scalps. Right now, Allan Border leads the table with 56 wickets.
Cummins is only the second Aussie captain after Border to pick up a 10-wicket haul in Tests. He returned with the match figures of 10 for 97 against Pakistan in the 2023 Boxing Day Test.
