Sachin Tendulkar, being the shelter of cricket records, without surprise, stays atop with six “1000 runs in a calendar year” in Test cricket.
Matthew Hayden is the only batter to score 1000 Test runs in five calendar years. The former Australian opener breached the milestone in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. This is also the most instances by an opener in Tests.
Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, the Australian former captain, accrued 1000 runs in two consecutive years twice.
Virat Kohli is the only batter to aggregate 1000 Test runs in three consecutive calendar years as a captain. He crossed the mark in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
Ponting is the other skipper to achieve the feat in three years, doing so in 2005, 2006, and 2008.
Andy Flower (1045 in 2000) and Jonny Bairstow (1470 in 2016) are the only wicketkeepers to score 1000-plus Test runs in a calendar year.
Mohammad Yousuf has scored the most Test runs and the most centuries in a single calendar year. He was in remarkable form in 2006, aggregating 1788 runs and nine hundreds in 19 innings for Pakistan.
Viv Richards (1710 in 1976) and Joe Root (1708 in 2021) are the other batters to amass 1700-plus runs in a calendar year in Tests.
Root is also one of the two batters to score 1500-plus runs in two years, with the other instance coming in 2024 (1556). Ponting is the other batter with two instances, in 2003 (1503) and 2005 (1544).
