“The Person born with talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it” Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
The above holds true for many upcoming cricketers in the IPL. The Indian Premier League, since its introduction in 2008, has been recognizing and awarding emerging talents for their performance against the big boys and showing character to find their happiness at the biggest Stage by rewarding them with the “Emerging Player of the Year Award.”
Criteria to win Emerging Players Award in IPL
The criteria to select such talents has a method to it:
- The Player must be born on 1st April or after 1993 (till 2019. The new criteria haven’t been released yet)
- The Player must have played 5 or fewer Test matches or 20 or fewer ODIs
- The Player must have played 25 or less IPL matches
- The Player should have never won the award in the past.
The year 2020 has a pool of young emerging Cricketers who want to make a name and win the award. So, let us look at 5 players who might put their hands up for the Emerging Player award, this season.
1. Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR)
People first heard of him when he got his name registered in the Limca book of the world record for scoring more than 300 and taking 13 wickets in a school cricket match. Yashasvi since than has only gone forward with his performances. He was also the highest scorer in the recently concluded U19 World cup. He would be plying his trade for Rajasthan Royals in 2020. He not only is a good and explosive batsman, but he also bowls leg-spin, which adds to his CV to be considered in the 11. Given a chance to play all the matches, he would be one of the prime contenders to hold the award.
2. Devdutt Padikkal (RCB)
The Kerala born southpaw was in peak form during the 2019 Indian domestic season. He was the top scorer in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019 for Karnataka. Devdutt would be showcasing his talent for the Red army Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2020 Edition. Given his recent form, he is the one to watch out for and stake a claim for the Emerging talent award.
3. Riyan Parag (RR)
He is the youngest cricketer to score a 50 in IPL history. Riyan did his reputation no harm in 2019 by scoring some crucial runs and claiming a couple of wickets for Rajasthan Royals. The year 2020 could indeed be Riyan’s year if he steps up to be the all-rounder and deliver the goods for his team; with the IPL scheduled in UAE, his bowling would add to his chances for staking a claim for the Emerging player award.
4. Prithvi Shaw (DC)
People have surely heard this name before. Prithvi plays for Delhi Capitals and qualifies to be in contention for the emerging Player award. He was in top form after his return to cricket from the ban. Prithvi has had enough experience in the IPL, and this might be his year. He has the game to destroy attacks by his brilliant and fearless stroke-play, this would be his last chance to win the Emerging player award, and he would surely want to make this year his own.
5. Ravi Bishnoi (KXIP)
The 20-year-old Ravi Bishnoi from Rajasthan is one to look out for, with more and more spinners making a name for themselves and creating an impact in the shortest format. He was the highest wicket-taker in the last U19 Cricket world cup. Kings XI Punjab does not have an experienced spin bowling line up, and this could land the Rajasthan leggie with enough opportunities to showcase his skills at the biggest stage. He for sure could be one of the promising candidates for the emerging player award.
I know it is a subjective choice and would like to hear from you whom you think is the cricketer who could win the Emerging player Award.
