Highest Partnership for Each Wicket in ODI

Partnerships win matches, irrespective of when they happen. Whether you bat first or chase, whether you are the openers or batting after the fall of five quick top-order wickets, it always matters.

So, here are the highest partnerships forged by two batters for each wicket in ODI cricket.

The 372-run partnership between Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels is the highest for any wicket in ODIs. This is also the highest partnership in the ODI World Cup, having formed against Zimbabwe in the 2015 edition.

Gayle added 215 runs in this record stand, making him the first double centurion in ODI World Cup history. This is the second-highest individual score by a batter in the World Cup.

Luke Ronchi contributed 170 runs in the unbroken 267-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Grant Elliott against Sri Lanka in 2015. Ronchi’s unbeaten 170 is the highest individual score by a No. 7 batter in ODIs.

Elliott also brought an unbeaten 104, making it the fourth instance of two batters aggregating centuries while batting at No. 5 or below in the same ODI innings.

The 177-run stand between Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid against New Zealand in 2015 played a major part in England crossing their first-ever 400-plus total in ODIs.

The unbroken 202-run stand between Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins against Afghanistan in 2023 is the only instance of a 200-plus partnership for the seventh or below wicket in ODIs. This is the second-highest partnership for the sixth or lower wicket in a successful ODI run chase.

Maxwell has also featured in the highest partnership for the sixth or lower wicket in a successful run chase. He forged a 212-run stand with Alex Carey for the sixth wicket against England in 2020.

In the same match, Maxwell hammered an unbeaten 201, the highest score by a No. 6 batter in an ODI innings. This is the only instance of a non-opener scoring a double century in ODIs. 

The 132-run partnership between Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga against Australia in 2010 is the highest for the ninth wicket in a successful ODI run chase. Interestingly, this is the only century partnership for the ninth wicket to come in a successful chase.

Overall, three hundred partnerships for the ninth wicket came in wins. The other two partnerships – 126* by India’s Kapil Dev-Syed Kirmani (vs ZIM, 1983) and 121 by Namibia’s Gerhard Erasmus-Bernard Scholtz (vs Oman, 2022) – came in the first innings.

Viv Richards and Michael Holding were the first pair to stitch a century partnership for the 10th wicket in ODIs. Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir and Saeed Ajmal are the only other pair to forge a hundred partnership (103) for the 10th wicket, against New Zealand in 2009.

The 103-run stand between Amir and Ajmal is the highest for the 10th wicket in an ODI loss.
