In ODI World Cup history, many teams have posted huge totals and defended successfully. However, sometimes the chasing team turned out to be too powerful and conquered the target with ease.

Chasing targets in a tense situation is not easy. Having said that, Pakistan did the unthinkable when the odds were against them and chased down Sri Lanka’s target of 345 runs. To date, this is the biggest team score a team has chased down with success in the World Cup.

345: In the 8th match of the 2023 edition, Pakistan broke the previous record of Ireland and successfully chased down the target of 345 against Sri Lanka, making it the highest run chase in the ODI World Cup history. Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108) hammered the Pakistani bowlers in the first innings, however, Abdullah Shafique’s (113) and Mohammad Rizwan’s (131*) crucial knocks took Pakistan over the ropes.

329: In the 2011 edition, Ireland chased down the target of 328 runs set by England, making it the second-highest successful run chase in the 50-over tournament. In a run-fest in Bengaluru, the Chinnaswamy crowd witnessed a thriller unfold in front of their eyes.

After electing to bat first, England posted a huge total of 328/8 thanks to Jonathan Trott’s 92 and Ian Bell’s 81 runs. In response, Ireland was reduced to 111 for 5, and then Kevin O’Brien unleashed his attack on the England bowlers. He not only helped Ireland win the match but also scored a quick-fire 113 runs off 63 balls.

322: Bangladesh has exactly scored 322 runs while chasing in 2 matches. The first time they did so was in 2015 against Scotland, which set a target of 319, while in the 2019 edition, the West Indies had set a target of 322 runs.

3: Ireland, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are the only 3 teams that have chased 300+ totals 2 or more times. Ireland has done it on three occasions. Their other two chases came against the Netherlands (307/4) in 2011 and the West Indies (307/6) in 2015.

30: The World Cup has seen more than 30 250+ run chases in its history.

1: India is the only team that has chased targets above 250 on more than 5 occasions.
