Indian Test Team Record Country-wise

India played their first Test match against England at Lord’s way back in 1932. And it took them close to 20 years (Feb. 1952) and 25 matches to register their first victory in the longer format.

Since India’s foray into the red-ball format, many prominent players have led the team. From Colonel C. K. Nayudu to Rohit Sharma, everyone has had their fair share of wins and losses in home and away Test matches.

In this article, we’ll look at the Indian Test team’s record in each country.

Key Insights

As mentioned earlier, India had to wait for almost 20 years to win their first Test match. In 1952, India made history by defeating England by an innings and 8 runs in Chennai. This also marked India’s first Test win on Indian soil.

Between 2013 and 2023, India won 16 consecutive Test series at home, establishing their dominance over their opponents.

India was part of one of the two Test matches that ended in a tie. India’s tied match came against Australia in Chennai in the 1986 Test series.

India’s most losses away from home have come in the seaming and swinging conditions of England

India toured Australia for 11 Test series between 1947 and 2015, losing 8 of them while drawing 3 series. But, after that, India toured Australia twice between 2018 and 2021, winning both series consecutively by 2-1 margin.

Since South Africa’s readmission into international cricket in 1992, India have toured the country 9 times, but they have yet to register a series win. And it remains the only territory where India hasn’t won any Test series.

When India toured the West Indies between 1953 and 2002, the Caribbean side dominated India. However, since 2006, the tables have turned, and India hasn’t lost any series thereafter.
