MS Dhoni has won the most tosses as a captain in IPL history, with 122 coin tosses going in his favour.

Dhoni has also led his teams to the most wins after winning the toss in the IPL, recording 78 victories. No other skipper has 50 wins after winning the toss.

Hardik Pandya and Adam Gilchrist are the two captains with a toss win percentage above 59 in the IPL (minimum 20 tosses won).

49 of Dhoni’s toss wins came in away games, again the most by a skipper in the league.

Gautam Gambhir has won the most consecutive tosses as a captain in the IPL, recording a streak of 21 toss wins for Kolkata Knight Riders between 2014 and 2017.

Gambhir (2013), Dhoni (2019) and Shreyas Iyer (2025) have won the most tosses as captains in an IPL season, with 12 instances each. See which of these seasons are in the list of IPL teams with most matches won in a single IPL season.

Dhoni elected to bat first after winning the toss 62 times and on the other 60 instances, he opted to bowl first, the most by a skipper in the IPL.

Gambhir (53), Rohit Sharma (53) and Virat Kohli (52) are the other skippers who decided bowl first in more than 50 matches after winning the toss.

Dhoni has also lost the most tosses in the league, having ended up on the other side in 113 matches.
