Ashwin’s record broke the one held by Dennis Lillee, which had stood for over 36 years. However, the quickest to 300 wickets among fast bowlers is now Pat Cummins, who reached the milestone in 55 matches.

Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka’s spin wizard and the highest Test wicket-taker of all time, was also incredibly fast to the mark. He took 58 matches to reach 300 wickets, the fastest spinner to do so and the record stood at the time for many years before being broken by Ashwin.

Shane Warne, Australia’s legendary spinner, reached 300 Test wickets in exactly 6 years, from his debut on 2 January 1992 to 2 January 1998. While a remarkable feat, the record for the fastest in terms of time taken is held by Pat Cummins, who did it in 3 years and 273 days.
