Evolution of a Strike Bowler: Hardik Pandya’s IPL Bowling Journey

Hardik Pandya’s Early Years and Mumbai Indians Breakthrough

Hardik Pandya didn’t really have a big impact with the ball in the early years, picking up just 10 wickets between 2015 and 2017.

Hardik averaged 176 and struck at 102 with the ball in 2015, the worst bowling average and strike rate by a bowler that season (minimum 100 balls bowled).

Pandya, however, picked up almost double the wickets in 2018 alone, ending the season with 18 scalps, one more than Mumbai’s lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

Hardik’s 18 wickets in 2018 were the most for Mumbai Indians (MI) and overall the joint fourth-most by a bowler in that season.

His bowling strike rate of 14.2 in 2018 was the joint fifth-lowest by a bowler in that IPL season (minimum 100 balls bowled).

Pandya took 14 wickets in MI’s title-winning season in 2019, becoming the third-highest wicket-taker for the team that season.

His bowling strike rate of 18.2 in 2019 was the second-best for Mumbai that year.

Record-Breaking Bowling Performance as Gujarat Titans’ Captain

The all-rounder took eight wickets for Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2022, the most wickets by a captain in that season.

Pandya’s overall bowling metrics in 2022 were the best by a captain.

Hardik had a below-par outing in 2023, picking up just three wickets while leading GT.

He averaged 76 in 2023, the worst-ever bowling average by a captain in an IPL season (minimum 100 balls bowled).

His bowling strike rate of 50 in 2023 is the second-highest by a captain in an IPL season (minimum 100 balls bowled).

Hardik Pandya’s High-Profile Trade and Transition to MI Captaincy

Hardik Pandya officially returned to Mumbai Indians (MI) on November 27, 2023, following a historic all-cash trade deal with Gujarat Titans.

Upon his return, Pandya’s 11 wickets in 2024 and 14 wickets in 2025 were the second-most by a skipper in those respective IPL editions.

His average of 35.18 and economy of 10.75 were the worst among all skippers in 2024.

In 2025, Hardik delivered his career-best spell of 5 for 36 against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow, which is also the best bowling figure by a captain in the IPL.
